Chronic pain and Heart Rate Variability (HRV): Why are the two related?
Heart Rate Variability is a technique for assessing the sympathetic and parasympathetic functions of the Central Nervous System.
Going into specifics, the “Central Nervous System (CNS)” is composed of two antagonistic subsystems that act together in a dynamic balance. The sympathetic system is involved in increasing the heart rate, while the parasympathetic system is involved in relaxing the body and thus slowing the heart rate.
